Gibraltar – Tarifa – La Linea de la Conceptión – Fortifikatorischer Exkursionsbericht einer Studienreise vom 15.09. bis 22.09.2018

Spätestens seit der Großen Belagerung in den Jahren 1779 – 1783 gilt Gibraltar landläufig in Europa als eine der stärksten Festungen, weil sie seitdem nicht mehr eingenommen werden konnte. Viele Festungsanlagen schmücken sich noch heute mit dem Beinamen wie z.B. „Gibraltar des Nordens“, „Gibraltar an der Donau“ usw. usf. Doch die Erkundung der Geheimnisse seiner Stärke war bislang nur wenigen vergönnt. Das lag vor allem an seiner strategischen Lage, die eine permanente Militärpräsenz der britischen Kolonialmacht in ihrer „Überseeprovinz“ erforderte. Mit Übergabe vieler Militärliegenschaften an die Stadtverwaltung von Gibraltar beginnt ein Transformationsprozeß, der mehr und mehr die Geheimnisse des Felsens enthüllt. Zunehmend werden die früheren Militäranlagen auch zu Touristenattraktionen umgewandelt, wobei die Denkmalpflege eine große Rolle spielt.

Erstmals war es einer deutschsprachigen Studiengruppe vergönnt, im Rahmen einer Pilottour der europäischen Kulturroute FORTE CULTURA den Fortifikationscharakter von Gibraltar intensiver zu analysieren und sich zugleich einen Überblick zu den Restaurierungsbemühungen vor Ort zu verschaffen. Zum Studium von Wechselwirkungen wurde die Tour durch zwei Exkursionen in das spanische Hinterland ergänzt.

Ever since the Great Siege of 1779 – 1783, Gibraltar has been widely regarded as one of the strongest fortresses in Europe, because since that time it could not be conquered. Many fortifications adorn themselves today with the name such as „Gibraltar of the North“, „Gibraltar on the Danube“, etc., etc. But exploring the secrets of his strength has been granted only to a few so far. This was mainly due to its strategic location, which required a permanent military presence of the British colonial power in its „overseas province“. With the transfer of many military properties to the City of Gibraltar begins a transformation process, which reveals more and more the secrets of the rock. Increasingly, the former military installations are also being converted into tourist attractions, with monument preservation playing a major role.

For the first time ever, a German-speaking study group as part of a pilot tour of the European cultural route FORTE CULTURA was given the opportunity to intensively analyze the fortification character of Gibraltar as part of a pilot tour of the European cultural route FORTE CULTURA, and at the same time to gain an overview of the restoration efforts on site. To study interactions, the tour was complemented by two field trips to the Spanish hinterland.
