Fortifikatorischer Exkursionsbericht einer Studienreise vom 15. bis 28. April 2023

Das nordwestliche Gebiet Afrikas stand seit alters her im Blick- und Brennpunkt benachbar-
ter Mächte. Im Westen vom Atlantik, im Norden vom Eingang zum Mittelmeer, und im Osten
und Süden von der Wüste umschlossen, sah sich das Land durch die Jahrhunderte beider-
seits der massiven Bergketten des Hohen und des Mittleren Atlas dem Ansturm verschie-
denster Interessenten und Potentaten ausgesetzt. Aus den Wüsten des Ostens kam der Is-
lam; zahlreiche Festungsanlagen in den Bergen und anderswo, die Kasbahs, wurden zur
Kontrolle der Küsten und des Hinterlandes mit den hier ansässigen und stets unruhigen Ber-
berstämmen errichtet. Vorwiegend an der Atlantikküste hinterließen europäische Kolonial-
mächte wie Portugal, Spanien, Frankreich und das Deutsche Reich ihre Spuren, die sich in
Form historischer Festungsanlagen darstellen und oftmals bis heute noch prägend für Stadt-
bild und Stadtentwicklung sind. Die Studienreise bot erstmals einen umfassenden Überblick
für diese in Marokko typischen Festungsanlagen an.

The northwestern region of Africa has always been the focal point of neighboring powers.
Enclosed by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the north, and the de-
sert to the east and south, the country has been exposed over the centuries to the onslaught
of various interested parties and potentates on both sides of the massive mountain ranges of
the High and Middle Atlas. From the deserts of the east came Islam; numerous fortifications
in the mountains and elsewhere, the kasbahs, were built to control the coasts and hinterland
with the resident and always restless Berber tribes. Mainly on the Atlantic coast, European
colonial powers such as Portugal, Spain, France and the German Empire left their mark,
which is represented in the form of historic fortifications and is often still characteristic of the
cityscape and urban development today. For the first time, the study tour offered a compre-
hensive overview of these fortresses, which are typical of Morocco.
